Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS)

The U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) is an agency of the Department of Justice and is a principal agency within the Federal Statistical System, the large network of government agencies primarily responsible for gathering data and statistics on various socioeconomic issues. Formed in 1979 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., BJS publishes authoritative data gathered from the more than 50,000 agencies comprising the U.S. justice system. Its mission is to “collect, analyze, publish, and disseminate statistical information on crime, criminal offenders, victims of crime, and the operation of justice systems at all levels of government” (Bureau of Justice Statistics 2020). It publishes data critical to federal, state, and local policymakers in their efforts to combat crime and ensure that justice is efficient and evenhanded. It is an agency within the Office of Justice Programs of the Department of Justice. Prior to 2012, the director of the BJS required Senate approval, but since 2012, it now only requires the president’s appointment.
